There is a work we are not showing you

In a workshop there are two kinds of work. The kind you put in the window, and the kind that sits in the back room under a sheet. About the first we talk gladly, and it is all in works. About the second, today, we say one thing only: it has entered production.

It is no longer an idea, no longer a drawing on paper. It is a live build, with people working on it, decisions taken, code running. It goes by the name Valli del Noce, and the veil lifts in the autumn.

What it is, what it will do, who it is for: nothing. Not out of coyness, and not to play mysterious. Because a launch prepared over months is spoiled by one word said too early, and whoever entrusted us with this work deserves to choose the day it gets told. Discretion is not a pose: it is a clause of the agreement, even when nobody writes it down.

What we can tell you is the other half, which is the part of the craft nobody ever talks about.

Keeping a work under wraps is technical labour

People assume a confidential project is kept safe by not talking about it. That is the easy part. The hard part is that a website, while you build it, tends to tell the whole story by itself.

A heading forgotten on a page. A description written for convenience inside a component, which the browser then downloads along with everything else, where anyone can read it. A file name, which looks harmless and is in fact an address. And the most elegant trap of all: a blurred image where the blur has actually covered only the photograph and left the words printed on top perfectly legible. A veil that does not veil is worse than no veil, because it lets you believe you are covered.

So the discipline in the workshop has become this: a work under wraps has no name in a file, no description in any downloadable bundle, no address anyone could guess, no presence in the data search engines read to understand what a page is about, and its image is genuinely blind, verified by looking at it rather than trusting the code that claims to have covered it.

The veil beside this article is exactly that. There is no filter blurring it on the fly: the image itself contains nothing legible. Download it and try to enlarge it: you will get nothing out of it, and that is precisely the point.

Why we are telling you

Because it is the best way we have of saying something to anyone weighing us up: the care with which we hold back a piece of information is the same care we will apply to yours. A supplier who cannot keep a secret on their own site will not keep one on yours.

And because we like working this way, with the lights on the method and the sheet pulled tight over the work. The rest arrives in the autumn.
